The much-awaited allotment of the first 6,900 ready tenements for mill workers will take place through a lottery system on June 28.

These houses have been built by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) over the past two years. But the government had not given them out owing to a lack of clarity on the method by which they would be allotted.

More than 1.48 lakh families, which includes 1.26 lakh mill workers and 22,701 workers’ heirs, have applied for the 6,948 homes which are ready.“We have made a list of eligible mill workers. Lots will be drawn, and the 6,900 houses available across areas of Lalbaug, Parel, Worli, Kandivli will be allotted to them,” said Sachin Ahir, minister of state for housing.

Each house will cost them an average of Rs8.34 lakh, depending on the location and size of the tenement.

Till date, Mhada has acquired 9.12 hectares from 25 mills across 20 locations on which they have been asked to construct another 7,000 tenements. But the authority has not done so yet, as it has not received the pending cost of tenements already built – approximately Rs600 crore – from the government.
