Man arrested for driving wife to suicide

A 33-year-old man from Nalla Sopara in Thane district was today arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife, police said.

Pinky, 27, who was married to Rajesh Sarda (33), allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her parents' home in Bhayander township of Thane last evening after being tortured by her husband for giving birth to a girl child.

The couple already have a son.

The accused, who was unemployed and was addicted to liquor, would often harass his wife for giving birth to a baby girl, as per the complaint filed by the victim's parents, Nalla Sopara police sub-inspector B S Londhe said.

The accused has been booked under sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498 (cruelty) of the IPC, police said, adding that they were probing the case.
