The police said Mani and the victim, Bhavana Venkatesh, a resident of Kailash building at Jacquenes Road in Matunga (East), were from the same village in Karnataka. The two had an affair before Bhavana got married and came to Mumbai.

Mani followed her to the city and settled in Matunga. “Mani began harassing Bhavana and pressuring her to divorce Venkatesh and marry him but she refused,” said police sub inspector P Datta.

“A few days ago Bhavana’s husband learnt about their affair and had a fight with her on the subject,” added Datta.

On Monday night, her husband called Mani to their house. Police said even in the presence of Venkatesh, Mani was pressurising Bhavana to divorce him.

After hearing this, Venkatesh, left the house. Mani tried to persuade Bhavana again. When she repeatedly refused his proposal, Mani picked up a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Bhavana in her chest and stomach and fled. When Venkatesh returned, he rushed her to the hospital. “Venkatesh registered a complaint against Mani following which we arrested him for attempt to murder. Mani has been remanded to police custody till December 10,” said Datta.
