Manickpur accused dies while being taken to police station

A 50-year-old man who was arrested for an attempt to murder case, died as he was being taken to the police station on Tuesday afternoon.

A 50-year-old man who was arrested for an attempt to murder case, died as he was being taken to the police station on Tuesday afternoon. The Manickpur police said Napolean Lopez who had been picked up by the police from a farmhouse in Manori for assaulting a corporator, died of a heart attack.

Vasai deputy superintendent of police, Deepak Devraj said, “We had registered a case of attempt to murder against eight accused, including Lopez, for assaulting corporator Praveen Bhoir on Monday.”

“We were informed that the eight accused were hiding at a farmhouse in Manori. We went to the farmhouse on Tuesday afternoon around 1pm, from where we arrested the eight accused.”

He added, “ As the eight accused were being taken to the Manickpur police station in two separate police vans, Lopez complained of chest pain. We rushed him to a local hospital where he was declared critical. We got him admitted to Bhagwati Hospital where he died of a heart attack.”

The eight accused had assaulted Bhoir, on Monday in connection with a union fallout, said Manickpur police. The police had registered an attempt to murder case after Bhoir was admitted to hospital because of the injuries sustained.

Meanwhile, family members of Lopez alleged foul play on the part of the police as the reason for his death. They want his death to be investigated.
