Most child murders in Maharashtra

Maharashtra has earned the inglorious distinction of having registered the most number of child murders (from the age of zero to 10 years) in 2011, while Mumbai came second in a list of cities on crimes against children, during the same period.

Maharashtra has earned the inglorious distinction of having registered the most number of child murders (from the age of zero to 10 years) in 2011, while Mumbai came second in a list of cities on crimes against children, during the same period.

As per the figures compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau of India, 141 children up to 10 years of age were murdered in the state. Of these, 78 were boys and 63 were girls.

The National Crime Records Bureau statitics also showed that Mumbai reported 425 crimes against children in 2011, 5.4% of the all-India total.

Delhi topped the list with a whopping 3,398 crimes against children last year.

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in the country, which has a notorious record of violence against women, came a far second with 96 murders.

Tamil Nadu came third in the list where the number of girl children murdered outnumber of boys.

Of the 90 children murdered in the state in 2011, 49 were girls while 41 were boys.
