After a half-hour chase, the accused, Anil Raut, accompanied by a woman, was caught near the Breach Candy Hospital at 2am. Raut, a Pune resident, had come to the city to meet his woman friend, a management student. The two were on their way to her Andheri home after a party in south Mumbai, police said.
When Raut saw police conducting checks near the Jaslok hospital, he tried to flee, knocking down constables Madhukar Shinghade and Shyamsundar Nikam. Beat marshals were put on Raut's trail and the injured constables were rushed to a hospital. They were later discharged. Raut was booked for rash and drink driving, among other charges.
In 2010, drunk NRI beautician Haveliwala had driven her SUV into a taxi and a police van, killing a police man and a biker, and injuring four constables. She was later sentenced to five years' imprisonment.
