A 39-year-old karate teacher was arrested on Friday for allegedly sexually assaulting 10-year-old twin girls in Mumbai's Vikhroli area.
According to the Parksite police, the incident occurred on August 8, but was recently reported to the police station. The twin girls were sexually assaulted inside a changing room adjoining a ground where the karate classes were conducted.
“The incident occurred around 8pm when the accused Datta Kate molested the twins. He asked the other students to meditate after the karate lessons. While the other students were meditating, he took one of the girls to the changing room where he asked her to undress herself and later touched her inappropriately,” said Rajendra Kulkarni, senior police inspector, Parksite police station.
The accused did not stop there. When the first girl left the changing room, he then asked her sister to come to the changing room and repeated the same instructions. “After the class, the twins spoke to each other and decided to skip the karate classes,” said Kulkarni.
On August 15, the mother of the girls asked them why they were skipping the classes and they told her. “The girl’s father confronted Kate, who apologised. Kate told them he will stop taking the classes,” said Kulkarni.
The parents of the girls did not complain then, but recently came to know Kate has started classes at another venue.
“The parents of the girls decided to report the incident because they did not want any other students to face the same. They approached us following which we registered a case and arrested the accused,” said Kulkarni.
Kate has been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) along with 8 (sexual assault) and 12 (sexual harassment) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).
The accused has been sent to police custody up to August 26.
