Bachchu Ali Siraj Ali was produced in court on Monday and remanded in police custody till Saturday.

He was carrying two knives when he attacked the 19-year-old woman on Sunday morning, said an officer from Juhu police station.

Ali had earlier attacked two women in a similar manner in 2010.

According to the police, the man came to Mumbai from Kolkata three months ago and was working in a hotel in Vile Parle. He had picked up the knives from the hotel and was waiting for the woman, said an officer.

The woman was on her way to work when Ali attacked her. Hearing her shout for help, a police beat marshal and locals caught the accused after chasing him for about 2km.

“Ali’s parents told the police that his wife had left him because of his constant fighting and abusing,” said the officer.

While the police suspect the attack was the result of a one-sided affair, the victim said she had never seen Ali before.
