A history-sheeter was allegedly bludgeoned to death by five of his friends on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to an officer from the Nallasopara police, speaking on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to talk to the media, “Caron Rozario, 29, a Nallasopara resident, had gone for dinner to Prabhat restaurant on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway around 11.50 pm on Friday. Five of his friends had accompanied him.”
“After dinner, the group left the restaurant around 3.30 am on Saturday. Outside, an argument erupted between Rozario and his friends, which soon snowballed into a huge fight. During the fight, one of the friends repeatedly hit Rozario on the head with a heavy stone. The friends then fled the spot, leaving Rozario lying by the side of the road bleeding heavily,” said an officer with the Nallasopara police station.
Some time later, an employee of the hotel noticed Rozario and rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead before admission. His body was later shifted to the Thane civil hospital for a post-mortem.
By Saturday afternoon, the Nallasopara police had detained two people – Shahanu Varghese and Vicky Chavan. Three more are wanted in the murder and efforts are on to trace them,” said S Koregaonkar, senior police inspector, Nallasopara police station.
Koregaonkar added that the motive behind the murder was not clear and investigations were on in the case.
He added that Rozario had several cases registered against him, including one for murder, with the Nallasopara police.
Varghese and Chavan, too, have been arrested in the past for assault, robbery and other crimes.
