The police said Aarti Chonkar, 65, a widow, lives with her son and daughter-in-law at Ovaripada in Dahisar (East).

The police said the incident occurred on the afternoon of January 10 when Chonkar returned from the hospital around 3.45pm and found the lock on the apartment’s door missing and the latch broken.

She immediately summoned the watchman of the building, Dilip Singh.

The duo opened Chonkar’s flat with her key and found the accused, Rashid Anwar, with a purse stuffed with the family’s jewellery worth Rs. 3 lakh. Anwar charged towards Chonkar with an iron rod, but Singh’s presence discouraged him.

An officer from the Dahisar police said, “Singh and Anwar then got into a scuffle. As Anwar tried to flee he fell down the staircase and other residents, who were alerted, caught Anwar and handed him over to us.”

The police believe Anwar may have been keeping a watch on Chonkar's apartment.
