The first show at the 650-sq-ft Terrace Art Gallery will open on April 9, showcasing works by veteran wildlife and heritage photographer RL Kothari. Kothari has funded the renovation of the gallery, which was mired in a lawsuit until five years ago, and has also decided to donate the proceeds of the upcoming exhibition to the gallery.

“It is a great honour for me and my family to have been able to help an institute such as Jehangir art gallery to promote photography,” Kothari said.

“We have been receiving requests from photographers from across the country to let them display photographs at the gallery,” said secretary KG Menon.

Now, they will finally have a space where their works will be guaranteed preference.

The space occupied by the new gallery had been lying vacant from 2007, when the City Civil Court of Mumbai ordered gallerist Chatan Arya and his family to vacate the premises.

In 2010, Kothari’s family came on board to fund the renovation of the space.
