One dead as drunk friend crashes car in Mumbai

A joy ride turned tragic for a group of four Mumbai collegians, when one of them was killed and another injured after the car they were travelling in crashed into a divider on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road on Saturday. The police said a preliminary medical test showed that the person at the wheel was driving under the influence of alcohol.
The deceased, who was identified as Kishor Tiruya, 18, was sitting in the backseat of the car with Omkar Jadhav, 18, while their friend Atul Chari, 26, was driving.
The group had attended a birthday party, where they consumed alcohol, the fourth occupant of the car told the police. The police have refused divulge his name as he will be made a witness in the case.
Following the accident, locals pulled the men out of the car and rushed them to Siddhartha Hospital, where Tiruya was declared dead, while Jadhav has fractured his elbow.
“The accident happened around 4am, when the men were travelling in their Maruti Ertiga, which crashed into the divider. The vehicle was descending a bridge and the driver was speeding because of which he lost control,” said Girish Anavkar, inspector at the Dindoshi police station.
The Dindoshi police have arrested Chari, who also owns the car. A case has been registered under sections 304A (causing death due to negligence), 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPL) and section 185 (driving under the influence) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
