Pillion rider dies after bus crashes into bike

A 52-year-old pillion rider lost his life after a BEST bus hit the motorbike he was travelling on from the rear at Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) in Jogeshwari (East) on Tuesday night; HT reports.

The Meghwadi police arrested the BEST bus driver on charges of causing death due to negligence soon after the accident.

The Meghwadi police said Mahendra Mandal, a contractor by profession, was riding pillion with his friend, Manish More, 30, an employee with a private firm at JVLR, when the incident occurred around 8pm on Tuesday.

“When the duo reached Shamnagar bus stop at JVLR, a speeding BEST bus hit their motorbike from the rear. Mandal was thrown off the bike from the impact,” said an officer from the Meghwadi police.

The police said Mandal was taken to Sion hospital where he died during treatment, as he had sustained grievous internal injuries.

The bus driver, Mahendra Krushna Benale, 46, was arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 279 for rash driving and 304A for causing death due to negligence.

“The driver, Benale, was released on bail after being produced before a metropolitan court on Wednesday,” the officer said.
