The police have arrested the driver, Jokhanlal Yadav.

The incident occurred around 12.30pm, after Lata Naidu, 35, picked up her son Gautam, a Class 1 student of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Vividhlaxi Vidyalaya, from school.

The duo was walking on Bhogilal Podia Road, a one-way lane, when the bus entered the lane from the wrong side. “The driver wanted to reverse, so he drove into the lane just as Gautam dashed across the road. The bus hit him head-on and he went under the wheels. His mother ran to pull him out and got hit,” said H Pimple, senior inspector, Kandivli police station. “They were not looking out for vehicles as the bus entered from the no-entry side of the lane.”

The duo was rushed to Bhagwati hospital, where Gautam was declared dead on arrival. His mother has fractured her leg and is in the ICCU.

The bus, hired by parents, was ferrying children from Gautam’s school to their homes. Yadav, a BEST employee who was standing in for the bus driver, fled the spot and was arrested from his Malvani residence.
