Respond to PIL on misuse of land for cows: Court to govt

The Bombay High Court has asked Maharashtra Government and the Charity Commissioner to respond to a PIL alleging illegal construction on a portion of land in suburban Mulund belonging to a trust set up for providing shelter to cows.

Justice Ranjana Desai, while asking respondents to file their response, told the petitioner on Wednesday that if the matter did not turn out to be in public interest then the court would impose costs on them.

The petition, filed by Champaklal Pujari, alleged that Nathoo Lalji Charitable Trust had frustrated its basic purpose and forced 275 cows to continue with their habitat in an unhealthy condition on a meagre plot of land of 200 square metres which was causing immense hardship to the animals.

The plot was acquired in 1924 through the Court.
