Retail traders plan to go on indefinite strike from April 29

Retail traders in Mumbai will go on an indefinite strike from April 29 to protest against the proposed Local Body Tax (LBT), a week after the wholesalers started their agitation.

Viren Shah, president, Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA), said the retailers will join the protest after a week. “It’s difficult for retail trade to strike work. Let the wholesalers first strike and once an atmosphere is created, we will join from the eight day,” said Shah. He said more than 20,000 traders will join the agitation.

The LBT is slated to replace octroi and the state has also promised to allocate funds to those municipal bodies who face problems garnering revenue.

Traders, however, have opposed the LBT. “LBT has all the clauses which would be used to harass us.”
