According to the police, the BMC officers had received information about a tempo that was passing from south Mumbai and had violated octroi duty. Acting on this information, officers of the BMC vigilance department intercepted the tempo near Hurkisondas Hospital in Girgaum.

The officials informed the police after they found cash and silver in the vehicles.

“We checked the contents of the tempo in front of an evaluator and found Rs25 lakh stacked in boxes. We also found 10kg silver in biscuit form in the tempo. The gold in the tempo was imitation jewellery,” said Ajit Surve, senior inspector, DB Marg police station.

Anil Kumbhare, deputy commissioner of police, zone 2, said, “The case was registered late on Friday night. The regional transport office is closed on Saturday and Sunday. We will get to know the details of the vehicle’s ownership on Monday.”

The police have registered a case of evading octroi duty and willfully cheating the civic body. The driver of the tempo was allowed to go after the vehicle was seized. However, the police may call him for further questioning.
