Navi Mumbai police commissioner Ashok Sharma said JD was in jail for two murder charges, including the high-profile murder of lawyer Shahid Azmi. Jagtap, who is said to owe allegiance to deceased gangster Bharat Nepali, is a history-sheeter wanted in eight criminal cases, including two murders in 2005 and 2008.
Immediately after the attack, Salem was rushed to a nearby civic hospital where he is receiving treatment. There was heavy bandobast of Vashi police outside the hospital.
Additional chief secretary (home) Amitabh Ranjan admitted there had been a security breach at the jail and strict action would be taken by the jail authorities against those found negligent.
