A 74-year-old woman was killed by an unknown person in her flat at Oshiwara in Jogeshwari (West) on Thursday. The police said the incident occurred between 10.30am and 12.30pm when the woman’s husband had gone out for work.
The victim, Mumtaz Rashid Badshah, was alone at home. The unknown person allegedly entered the house and tied her hands. He then slit her throat with a kitchen knife in the bedroom, the police said. The motive is unclear, but the police have ruled out robbery.
Mumtaz used to stay with her husband Rashid Badshah, 75, on the ground floor of Rizwan Apartment at Aksa Masjid Road near 24 Karat in Jogeshwari (West). The police said Mumtaz’s son lives in the same area with his wife and son.
The incident came to light when Rashid was calling Mumtaz on her mobile phone, but when she did not pick up the call, he called his grandson and asked him to check on her.
“The grandson immediately rushed home and found the door was locked from the inside,” said Subhash Khanvilkar, senior inspector at Oshiwara police station.
The grandson then peeped from the bedroom window and found his grandmother lying in a pool of blood. Her throat was slit and the knife was lying nearby. He called his grandfather and informed him about the incident, said a police officer.
A team of Oshiwara police and the crime branch rushed to the spot.
“The reason behind the murder is not clear. The family did not find any valuables missing from the home,” said Khanvilkar.
