The incident took place at 12.10am near Gundavali state transport bus stop on the southbound stretch of the western express highway. The unidentified man, aged around 60 years, was crossing the road, when a speeding car knocked him down. The police concluded the vehicle might be a car based on the shattered glass pieces found at the crime spot. The matter came to light only when a patrolling police van of the MIDC police spotted the man lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A police official said there was a dire need to install CCTV cameras on the WEH, which could not only help in keeping a check on hit-and-run cases, but also keep street crime at bay.

No eyewitness has so far come forward.

The Andheri police have registered an FIR under section 304 A (causing death due to negligence), 279 (rash driving) of the IPC and 134 A and B of the Motor Vehicles Act for escaping from the spot without rendering help to the victim. The Andheri police are trying to ascertain the deceased’s identity.
