Skywalks unsafe for women: Mumbaiites

Most Mumbaiites feel that skywalks are unsafe for women, especially during odd hours, reveals a survey conducted by students of St Xavier's College. Of the 1,000 respondents who were using 10 of the skywalks in the city, 63.2% said the skywalks were not safe for women, while 42.6% felt they were generally unsafe.

Respondents said the skywalks are poorly maintained and an overwhelming 81.4% of the users felt they should be manned by security personnel.

"The main concern was the lack of security," said Manzi Jarald, 19, one of the nine second-year students of the college who conducted the study in January as part of their coursework for the 'contemporary issues' module. "The concern is that the police are below, so if anything untoward happens, no one would realise it."
