Speeding car crushes Malad man to death

A speeding car rammed and crushed to death a 40-year-old man inside his building compound on Wednesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Devang Yashwant Shah, 40, a resident of Jagmiya building near Liberty Garden in Malad (West). Devang was a stockbroker, the Malad police said.

According to the police, the incident took place around 10pm when Shah and his wife Seema, 37, were returning from the temple. The couple was walking inside the compound when a speeding Maruti 800 came towards them. Realising that the car was going to hit them, Shah pushed his wife aside before he got the crushed between the car and the compound wall of the building.

Police said Bhavesh Gala, a dealer in second-hand cars, was driving the car. He had come to the building to deliver the Maruti 800 to another resident, Nilesh Nagda, was had purchased the second-hand vehicle for Rs29,000.

Gala, who was driving at a high speed, panicked on suddenly seeing the couple in front of the car and accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, the police said.

Shah was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The locals informed the police about the accident and Gala was arrested from the spot. “We have booked Gala under section 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code,” said R Prabhu, inspector, Malad police station.

The family of the deceased refused to comment.
