Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who resigned on the issue and just rejoined the cabinet after the government published a white paper, is likely to make a statement in the house.

Sources said the probe could be by a committee of former bureaucrats or a team of experts or even a special investigation team.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan is keen on a judicial probe, but the Nationalist Congress party (NCP) is reluctant.

The Opposition has been demanding a probe by an SIT.
