A friendly cricket match took an ugly turn when two teenagers beat up a 19-year-old engineering student with cricket stumps, leading to his death on Wednesday.
The police are on the lookout for the accused, both 19-year-old engineering students, who have been booked for murder.
On Sunday, the three were playing a match at the ground in MIG colony, Kurla, when the victim, Mohammad Saif, and the two accused, Naeem Shaikh and Hammad Antulay, reportedly got into an argument. Police said the exact provocation is unclear.
The next day, Shaikh and Antulay went to Bachchan Nagar in MIG colony, where Saif lived, and called him out. A heated argument ensued. “Shaikh and Antulay then hit Saif on the head several times with cricket stumps,” said Subhash Raut, senior inspector, VB Nagar police. An officer, who did not wish to be named, said Saif’s friend Riyaz Shaikh witnessed the assault and also suffered injuries. Riyaz, however, refused comment.
Shaikh and Antulay fled after the assault, while Saif’s neighbours took him to the Kurla Nursing home nearby. He was later shifted to the Sion Hospital, where he died of multiple head injuries around 11 am on Wednesday.
Saif’s father Shafique and his relatives lodged a complaint at the VB Nagar police, who registered a case against Antulay and Shaikh under IPC section 326 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means).
They have been booked for murder. “The boys are missing from their homes but we hope to catch them soon,” said Raut.
Doctors at Sion Hospital said Saif was in critical condition when he was brought in. “He had severe bleeding inside the brain,” said Dr Meena Kumar, head of surgery department.
Shaikh and Antulay are students of a college in Vashi and live in Kurla. Saif was a student of Saboo Siddiqui college at Nagpada.
