On Sunday afternoon, Abdulrahim Sheikh, who lived near the construction site, jumped into the pit dug up by the builder, Khubchandi, for construction purposes.

Police suspect the teenager did not know how to swim and had assumed the pit was shallow.

When Sheikh didn't return home till evening, his parents started worrying.

His parents then started looking for him, with help from neighbours.

At night, locals found his clothes near the pit.

"The locals informed the police and fire brigade officials. At 12.10 am, Sheikh's body was fished out," said an official from the DN police station, requesting anonymity for lack of authorisation to talk to the media.

Police have registered a case of accidental death.

In a related incident, a labourer drowned in a pond at Dharavi on Monday evening.

At 5.30 pm, locals heard Eliyaz Hussain Sayyed (30), who had gone for a swim in the pond, screaming for help.

They informed the fire brigade and within 30 minutes a police team and firemen rushed to the spot and got him out of the water.

Sayyed was rushed to Sion hospital by the police, but was declared brought dead by the doctors there.
