Thief who robbed cop’s house caught by accident

During a routine nakabandi, inspector Dayanand Bangar from Charkop police unknowingly arrested the man who had broken into his house in May and stolen valuables worth Rs1.77 lakh.

During a routine nakabandi, inspector Dayanand Bangar from Charkop police unknowingly arrested the man who had broken into his house in May and stolen valuables worth Rs1.77 lakh.

According to the police, on July 22, Gopal Nashkar, 25, was travelling an autorickshaw to carry out another in theft when he was stopped at Hindustan Naka in Charkop

A police team, headed by Bangar, had stopped the auto for checking. However, they got suspicious when they found Nashkar carrying tools used by thieves to break into houses.

During interrogation, Nashkar admitted that he was on his way to carry out a theft. He also confessed having broken into the police quarters at Kandivli where Bangar lived.

On May 28, while Bangar was on duty and his family was on vacation, Nashkar had broken into the flat and made away with cash and valuables. A case was registered with the Kandivli police.

“Nashkar had carried out two similar thefts in Charkop and stole cash and valuables worth Rs1.98 lakh. He operates alone and hasn’t been arrested before,” said Vasant Devarkar, senior inspector, Charkop police station.

According to the police Nashkar earlier worked for a television channel. He was sacked after he was caught stealing.

“He has been remanded to police custody. We have recovered stolen goods worth Rs1.97 lakh,” said Devarkar.
