Assistant police inspector AG Bothare, Neral police station, said, "Naina Ashok Jadhav, 21, Nilima Balaram Jadhav, 19, and Kirti Balaram Jadhav, 14, were from the same family and had gone to visit their aunt at Pashaan.
On Friday morning, around 12 members from the family went for a picnic to the Vanlakshmi waterfalls.
One of the girls, Naina, decided to go higher up the waterfall but lost her footing. When the other two tried to save her, they too slipped and were dragged by the force of the water currents and drowned.
Police said they had placed a signboard near the waterfalls to warn people about possible dangers. "But people ignore these warnings," said an officer.
