Amit Singh, 26, and Parag Sawant, 32, sustained severe brain injuries and are currently admitted at Jaslok Hospital at Pedder Road and Hinduja Hospital at Mahim respectively.

Singh has not gained consciousness from July 11, 2006. Sawant gained consciousness in 2010 and can move his head and arms. “The media may remember Sawant once a year but he goes through the pain everyday,” said Sawant’s uncle Suresh Salunke. “On a good day he is much better. He talks, eats and smiles. However, once or twice a month he suffers from convulsions and his condition worsens,” said Dr DK Mishra, Sawant’s doctor.

At the High Dependence Unit (HDU) at Jaslok Hospital the nursing staff is used to Singh’s routine and treats him like family. “He is our longest staying patient. He has a vacant look in his eyes,” said Dr SK Mohanty, medical director of Jaslok Hospital. Doctors said it was unlikely that his condition would improve.

WR officials said they had spent Rs. 1.3 crore at Jaslok Hospital and Rs. 83.5 lakh at Hinduja Hospital for their treatment.
