An 18-year-old suspected of robbery was beaten to death by Vikhroli locals after he was caught entering a house in the wee hours on Saturday. The police have registered a case of murder against four persons.
The incident took place at around 2.30am in the Uday Nagar slums located in the Parksite area of Vikhroli (East) when Arjun Gorkha, a resident of the same slum, was attempting to enter a chawl tenement. “The occupants were woken up by the noise. They overpowered him and started shouting for help,” said an officer from the Parksite police station.
Soon, a crowd of neighbours gathered outside and started beating up Gorkha, the police said. “Some locals knew Gorkha and become more agitated as he was targeting his own chawl,” the officer said. A few picked up bamboo sticks and started beating Gorkha with them, the police said.
“The crowd thrashed Gorkha until he fell unconscious and then dumped near a temple. They did not realise he was dead by then,” the officer said.
The Parksite police team that had been informed about the attempted robbery reached the spot and took Gorkha to Rajawadi hospital, where he was declared dead on admission.
Deputy commissioner of police (zone 7) Sanjay Shintre said that Sashi Kenjale, Amol Kenjale, Ramesh Nawale and Sagar Kumbhar have been arrested on charges of murder. He added that two cases of theft had been registered against Gorkha in the past.
