Beena Dedhia was pronounced dead at KEM Hospital; her husband Jatin (41) is in the ICU.
The attack took place at Parel, half a kilometre away from the Kala Chowki police station. Jatin runs a grocery store in Lalbaug.
The police said the robbers were on a motorcycle and threatened the couple with a knife, demanding that they hand over their valuables and money.
“Jatin obeyed and handed over a gold chain and Rs 3,000, but Beena resisted, and the robber [riding pillion] slashed her throat,” said Ramesh Poman, senior police inspector, Kala Chowki police station.
The police said Jatin tried to hail a cab, but the driver did not stop.
“A few minutes later, a biker noticed Beena bleeding and called the police control room,” Poman said. The control room alerted the Kala Chowki station.
The police said the assailants were yet to be identified.
