He hails from the City of Joy - Kolkata - and is a perfect example of a singing sensation in the making. A regular live performer since the age of 15, Arnab Chakraborty came to Mumbai in 1999 to pursue playback as a career. After a brief struggle and mastering a few singing competitions, Arnab got the big break he was waiting for. His song Wada Raha Pyar Se Pyar Ka from the film Khakee has climbed the popularity charts quickly generating enough curiosity about the soothing voice behind the successful song.
Born and brought up in Kolkata, Arnab grew up listening to the music of S D Burman, R D Burman, Salil Choudhary, Hemant Kumar, Manna De and many legendary musicians from Bengal. Influenced by the singing of legends like Kishore Kumar, Mohd. Rafi, Talat Mehmood and Mukesh amongst others, Arnab developed a liking for playback since the tender age of 10. As he grew up his interest in Indian Classical Music reached new heights.
A Commerce Graduate, Arnab has learnt western music from the Calcutta School of Music for three years. At present he trains himself in Hindustani Light Vocal under the tutelage of Pandit Achyut Thakur from Mumbai University. He is also learning Hindustani Classical from Shri Gautam Mukherjea of the Kirana Gharana.
Besides performing at live shows, Arnab has participated in several top-level competitions. He won the R D Burman Award at an inter-state singing competition in 1996-97. He is also the winner of the Coca Cola Rock The Mike Contest 2002 and the MTV Video Ga Ga Awards 2002, where Javed Akhtar discovered him in the presence of greats like Jatin-Lalit and Usha Uthup.
After coming to Mumbai, Arnab started singing jingles for top brands like Airtel, Ponds, Air Sahara, Vimal, Pears, Cadbury, Indian Oil, LG TV, etc. Simultaneously he also sang remixes for albums like Romanov Party Mania, Swing Thing, RD9, Kamar Tod Mix and many more. During this period he worked with composers like Shantanu Moitra, Raju Singh, Jayanta Pathak, Leslie Lewis, DJ Akbar Sami, DJ Nasha and many more.
Arnab made his debut as a playback singer as one of the singers of the title track of Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. And now with Khakee, Arnab is heading for big times in Bollywood. He has already recorded with composers like Jatin-Lalit, Nikhil-Vinay, Jeet-Pritam and M M Kreem. Arnab is also talking to music labels for solo albums.
