Who thought a bunch of 20-year-olds would conquer the world! We’re talking about Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson of the English-Irish boyband, One Direction. Hit music apart, the boys recently came up with a documentary, This is Us, based on their meteoric rise to fame. The former X-Factor contestants get candid about India, ‘rival’ star Miley Cyrus, personal life and more.

What do you think of India? Do you plan to visit India anytime soon for a concert or vacation?
We recently got to know that Kolkata had a big special screening of This is Us, they all went mad over it. We know Indians love us a lot and we plan to extend our gratitude to them soon. May be during the next album launch in coming months. We know about Bollywood life and would be glad to do a number for any Bollywood film.

In a recent interview Miley Cyrus, said she doesn’t “know much about 1D”. What do you have to say after you beat her at the Video Music Awards in the 'Best song of the summer' category?
Harry: Now that we’ve won the award (for Best Song Ever), the success says it all. We have our supporters to thank. Don’t be jealous, be fair. We won and the heat is generated somewhere else LOL.

Zayn’s fiancee Perrie Edwards faced an onslaught on social networking sites from many of his crazy female fans. Does this affect your relationship?
Zayn: Definitely not. We both know each other since long now, and we know how to tackle those ghosts. They can’t be successful in haunting us. This will go on, what matters is our relationship that too will go on forever.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that 1D is the UK’s wealthiest boy band with a combined fortune of £25million! Does it ever feel like it’s all too much to handle?
We are fortunate enough to build such a big fortune. We owe this to our families and fans. This is a lot of money to handle. We don’t know where it will take us, but we intend to stay focussed. Niall wants to go out on a long world tour with his family with his money. And Zayn wants to spend this on someone special.. we all know who.. Lol.

In your film, your parents are seen getting emotional, revealing that they rarely get to see their boys anymore. How do you cope with it?
We regret being away from home. We know our family likes to be with us, but work keeps us busy. But we make sure we spend time with them. Recently Niall took out time and went for golfing with his father. They enjoyed each bit of it. It was peaceful. Liam also at times sneaks out of work and spends time with his family and Sophia. Our families understand that we all are doing this for them.

‘We play pranks on each other’

Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis — how does it feel to connect with fans with a music documentary, One Direction: This Is Us, that has concert footage, personal moments as well as some behind-the-scenes craziness. Is there anything you wish you hadn't revealed in the film?
The ‘directioners’ (as they call their fans) are our wealth. We like to be connected to them and they are the ones who’ve made us No.1 in 37 countries.
Louis: The movie has the correct things to reveal. We all were comfortable with it. (The film’s director) Morgan Spurlock adds more to our fame.
Zayn: The documentary has everything about us that directioners should know. As far as revealing is concerned I’d rather say that Morgan has given us all our privacy and has kept some things under cover. Like moments of Perrie and me. That’s our personal stuff. I at times had days off from work and the two of us went out for a holiday, the cameras weren’t taken there.

The five of you clearly spend a lot of time together, thanks to the band’s busy schedules and never-ending commitments. How about you disclose an irritating habit of each one of you?
We all are smooth always, we turn work in to play. We keep playing pranks on each other. Recently, on a shoot, Louis slapped Niall and we all made good fun of him. We love to play on each other. We remember one night, Zayn stood up the entire time and had irritated us to the core. He got on our nerves but we know we all do this to each other, so it was just his day!

What do you guys do together, when you’re not making music?
Zayn is good at graffiti, we at times join him for that. Liam has his personal Twitter account, and he logs into it to do a little bit of timepass. And, Harry just likes to play with his hair!

Apart from winning the Best Song of the Summer title, what’s your best memory from the recent VMAs?
Liam: We got to meet Lady Gaga first time properly. So we have unforgettable moments to take home.

More on the boys!
The band was introduced to the masses on the British TV singing competition, The X Factor, in 2010. They came third, but were soon signed by the show’s judge Simon Cowell’s record label. The rest as they say, is history, as the band went on release the hit albums, Up All night (2011) and Take Me home (2012). Their third album, Midnight Memories, will be out later this year.
