What do Sreeram Chandra and AR Rahman have in common? They’ve both worked in Hollywood productions. While one needn’t mention any of Rahman’s exploits, 24-year-old Sreeram adds a feather to his cap for singing in the soundtrack of the upcoming 3D fantasy-adventure movie, The Chronicles of Narnia – The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Earlier this year, Sreeram Chandra won Indian Idol 5 —a music-based reality show.
“Singing for a Hollywood film has been the biggest thing in my life so far. This is what I always wanted to do!” Sreeram says. “Earlier it was more struggle and hard work. But Indian Idol has given me an identity. People from across the world know my capabilities and me.”
The song Rehnuma... will feature in the credit sequence in localised versions of the third film in the Narnia series. For instance, American Idol and five-time Grammy winner Carrie Underwood has sung the end title There’s a place for us for the US version. In India, there are three regional versions — Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, with Chandra singing in all three. “Recording was fun but required plenty of patience. I kept my calm throughout and am happy with the results.”
The singer will also feature in the music video, which will have clips from the film. Sreeram is the only artiste from Asia collaborating with Fox for the film. “Fox Star Studios watched me on Indian Idol and liked my voice. They thought I’d gel well with the concept. After seeing the films, I too feel that my story is similar to that of the children in the movie”, explains Chandra.
