He proudly wears a lungi and jokes about not knowing how to play the guitar, but the enthusiastic crowds at his concerts prove that he is indeed a rockstar. That is musician Raghupathy aka Raghu Dixit for you, who will be performing today at a music event in the city. The international star will belt out his popular numbers, as well as some of his unheard tracks for the city audience.

From being a Bharatanatyam dancer to capturing the world music scene with his rock version of folk music, Dixit took up music as a challenge from a classmate. “Boys performing Indian classical dance were not considered so macho, and hence, my fellow classmates used to tease me a lot. So, just to prove myself, I learnt the guitar in a month and prepared a song too,” says the Mysore born musician.

Dixit’s fans must have seen him strumming the guitar in a very innovative way. As to the secret behind this unique style, he says, “It’s not a special instrument, but a regular acoustic guitar. It’s just that my tuning of the instrument is different from the standard tuning.”
Another peculiar sight that greets the audience at all of Dixit’s performances is that of him wearing a lungi, to which he says, “Being a south Indian, that’s what I grew up wearing! Also, one can really experiment with the lungi with different colours, and that’s what folk music is also about,” he says.

At the performance, music lovers will get to listen to Dixit’s popular numbers such as Mysore Se Ayi, Mumbai, Antaragni and Gudugudiya. “I will be performing some of my new songs as well. I want to see the reaction of the audience to these numbers before actually recording them later this month,” he says.

As for his experience of performing in the city, Dixit says, “The people here give a prompt response and understand the music that one is playing.”
