Never thought I’d fit the bill: Kavita Seth
Singer Kavita Seth of Tumhi Ho Bandhu fame says she never thought she would sing in Bollywood. Within days of its release, everyone was humming the song Tumhi Ho Bandhu. Kavita Seth’s resonant voice has as much to do with the song’s success.music Updated: Jul 18, 2012 17:10 IST
Within days of its release, everyone was humming the song Tumhi ho bandhu, and it raced to the top of the charts. Kavita Seth’s resonant voice has as much to do with the song’s success as the addictive melody. But Kavita admits she was hesitant to sing it. “Given my kind of voice, I usually sing in mid-octave. But Pritam (composer) insisted that I try singing this song on a higher pitch. I was worried, but I’m happy with the way it shaped up,” she says.
The sufi singer is most happy singing kalaams (spiritual compositions). Kavita recently launched her new album, Om, which is all about therapeutic mantras. “I’ve chanted Om as well as another mantra from the Bhagwad Gita 108 times in the this meditative album. It was conceptualised while I was going through a difficult phase after my husband’s death six months ago,” says Kavita, who rose to fame with the song Iktara (Wake Up Sid, 2009), sweeping several awards that year.
Currently, she is looking forward to the India release of Michael Winterbottom’s Trishna, in which she has sung three tracks. “It is amazing to be a part of an international production. I am honoured to have got an opportunity to sing not one but three songs in it,” she says.
Having carved a niche for herself in Bollywood with her unique sufi- infused vocal style, Kavita isn’t open to singing item numbers? “I have received offers in the past, but I don’t think I can do justice to item songs. It doesn’t go with my personality. I only sing songs with lyrics that have a connection with divinity,” she says.
