‘This is another opportunity for India to shine’

Some voices from the Indian music industry offer their take on the question of the day...

Sona Mohapatra (singer)
The Grammy is genuine celebration of genuine music. I’m proud for the Indian nominees but none of them need a Grammy to prove their calibre. It’s just that the nomination brings their music into greater focus.

Mohan Kannan (singer from band Agnee)
The stature of the nominees this year is above any award any industry can give. It may be a ‘huge’ thing for the musicians themselves though and it will be great to see some more Grammys come India’s way. If nothing else, it’ll offer a boost to other Indian musicians and give them more opportunities to be on a global stage.

Vishal Dadlani (singer-composer)
AR Rahman’s going to win this one too, for sure! But the Grammy is still just an award.

Salim Merchant (composer)
I think this is another opportunity for India to shine. Ustad Zakir Hussain is my idol, and I have learnt so much working with him. I will be praying for him.
AR Rahman, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and he are way beyond the Grammy. Still, I’m hoping Rahman gets this one too. After the BAFTA and the Oscars, he would come a full circle.
It will be a huge honour for our country and for us musicians. India is the talk of the planet now, and it will give us another opportunity to feel proud.

Akriti Kakar (singer)
The Grammy phenomenon is so huge that even when I was a kid, I’d aspire for one, without knowing what it was. It’s a huge honour and when three legends of Indian music are up for it, I just pray that they return back home with it. But irrespective of the win, I believe for us, the victory lies in the nomination itself, since it shows that the world is now acknowledging India’s finest musicians more openly.

Shekhar Ravjiani (composer)
The Grammy is a prestigious event and I've always been intrigued by its grandeur and magnitude. It's an absolute pleasure to hear that three of India's most tremendous talents have been nominated. I'm pretty sure they will all bag them! My prayers are with them.
