Vashi proves its metal

No distance is too long for metal heads to catch their favourite acts in action. Although Vashi might come across to some as an unlikely destination for an underground festival, an upcoming event might add to the cool quotient of the suburb.

No distance is too long for metal heads to catch their favourite acts in action. Although Vashi might come across to some as an unlikely destination for an underground festival, an upcoming event might add to the cool quotient of the suburb. Just ahead of Diwali, it will host a metal concert, titled The Grand Mammoth Festival MMXIII. It will feature bands such as Zygnema, Cosmic Infusion and Atmosfear, among others.

Organiser and drummer Jeff Dani says, “Putting together the event wasn’t a cakewalk. It is difficult, since we don’t get sponsors easily. One of the persons whom we approached for sponsorship said, ‘If Sonu Nigam is performing, then we will do it.’ If people don’t organise metal gigs, how will the scene grow in India?”

The fact that the event is in Vashi doesn’t bother him. In fact, he is looking forward to a great turnout. “The Marine Centre is one of the famous venues for underground metal and rock shows. My only worry is that crowd might not turn up since it is happening on the Diwali weekend,” he says.

Another incentive to attend the show is that the ticket is priced reasonably low, at only Rs150. “I have kept in mind that the crowd should be able to afford the ticket. Until now, we have received a good response. I just hope everything goes well,” Dani says.
