You might have enjoyed the performance of a live band while relishing a meal with friends at a restaurant, but how about if you also get to judge the act? A rock festival cum competition, titled, Emergence, will be held in the city today, in which 40% weightage will be given to the votes from the bands on the judging panel — Soulmate from Shillong, and Junkyard Groove from Chennai, while 60% will depend on what the crowd likes.
The three participating city-based bands — The Doppler Effect, The Incredible Mind Funk, and Grammy Winning Effort, who will battle it out for a cash prize of Rs1 lakh at Lemp Brewpub & Kitchen in Gurgaon, tonight, think it’s a good idea. “It’s great that the audience has a larger say because at the end of the day, you have to put up a show to entertain people,” says guitarist Shashvat Pandit of Grammy Winning Effort. “It’s nice that the crowd can decide the winner. We may not have as big a fan base as the other two bands, so we’re happy that the judges’ votes matter too,” says vocalist Sherry Mathews of The Doppler Effect.
But when the decision is in the hands of the crowd, it may also mean that the band to get more friends to cheer ends up winning. “This surely is a setback, but it is also a challenge — to win new audiences,” says guitarist Siddhant Agarwal of The Incredible Mind Funk.

The festival will also see performances by the bands on the judging panel.
