THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 90-year-old cancer patient was sexually assaulted by a man who barged into her house in Kadakkal near Kollam in south Kerala. The incident took place on September 14 but came to light only on Wednesday. The woman does not have any children and has been living alone for 20 years since the death of her husband.The state human rights commission registered a case suo motu and asked the police to submit a report within a week. According to the police, the accused broke into the woman’s house through the rear door in the night and assaulted her at knife point. She also suffered injuries in the scuffle. The victim’s relatives and neighbours reportedly asked her to keep quiet when she alerted them the next morning. The panchayat member of the area also showed similar apathy and ignored her complaint, the victim alleged. A social worker from the area later alerted the police. Doctors have confirmed that the woman was a victim of sexual assault. The victim has named a man from the area who is absconding.
