NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill that provides for a single, common examination for medical and dental courses and also brings private colleges under its ambit.

The bill replaces the ordinance that was promulgated by the government to circumvent the SC order for implementation of NEET examination this session itself.

It was a history of sorts in the Lok Sabha where the ordinance was introduced, bill circulated and passed in the same day. One objection from the Opposition benches was also withdrawn after MoS parliamentary affairs SS Ahluwalia argued for the need of the bill.

The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and the The Dentists (Amendment) Bill, 2016, provide a constitutional status to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) examination which is intended to be introduced in the academic session next year.

Nadda responded to apprehension of Tamil Nadu MPs, where reservation is up to 85%, saying, “We are not going to touch state quota. Students in Tamil Nadu will compete there only.” However, AIADMK members staged a walkout.
