KANPUR: A 17-day-old boy survived after being thrown from a hospital roof on Sunday by his aunt, who felt that his birth would lower her status in the family as she had three daughters.
The baby, Anmol, was found entangled in an iron net put in place to prevent monkeys, 16 feet below the roof of Shyam Maternity and Children hospital in Indira Nagar, Kalyanpur.
His aunt, Sarita Devi, was arrested after CCTV showed her taking him from the hospital ward and returning without the baby.
Anmol was being treated for some complications after his birth at the hospital. His parents, Sarvesh Kumar and Alka, from Indergarh (Kannauj), had left him under Sarita’s care as they needed rest, police said.
At around 4.30am, Sarita raised an alarm about the child missing. When the hospital staff failed to find the baby, police were called in. A constable, while searching in an adjoining lane, heard muffled cries.
“Anmol was suspended from the iron net as a part of his clothes was caught by a protrusion. Thank God, he didn’t fall,” said Pankaj Kashyap, the ward boy who filed the complaint.
Later, when police scanned the CCTV footage, they saw Sarita taking the baby to the roof at 4amand later returning without the child.
“She is under arrest and a case is being registered against her,” said Rajdev Prajapati, station officer, Kalyanpur.
Sarita reportedly told police that she feared that Anmol’s birth would result in his mother getting more respect than her in the family. “I have three daughters and not a day goes by when I am not bitterly teased about it,” she said.
