65-year-old crushed by truck carrying Kanwarias in Ghaziabad hit-and-run
Friday was the concluding day of annual Kanwar Yatra when Kanwarias arrived more in numbers along with the ‘Dak Kanwars.’
In an alleged hit-and-run case involving a ‘Dak Kanwar’ on NH-24 in Ghaziabad, a truck part of their cavalcade crushed a 65-year-old man to death and injured his 28-year-old son on Friday morning.
The victim’s family said even though the police arrived within minutes, they hardly took steps to nab the Kanwarias who easily escaped through the busy highway.
The incident took place around 8.30am when Abdul Majeed and his son Shamshad left their house at Rajapur near Kavi Nagar on a bike and took a turn to national highway-24. The Kanwar group was heading towards Lal Kuan.
“Their bike was hit by one of the bikes travelling with the ‘Dak Kanwar’ brigade and both fell down. Majeed was on the road on one side when the truck in the ‘Dak Kanwar’ cavalcade ran over his head. He died on the spot,” said Siraj, Shamshad’s cousin.
Shamshad sustained a leg injury. He dialled the police emergency number and his family.
“Within minutes, a police patrol bike and a PCR van arrived. By then, the Kanwarias had fled. They had ‘Greater Noida’ written on the truck and could not be found thereafter even as the highway remained busy with traffic. Even the police did not go ahead in search of the group,” Siraj added.
The police took Shamshad to a nearby Kanwar camp where they scanned CCTV footage but the vehicle’s registration number could not be ascertained.
“We have registered an FIR under section causing death by negligence and rash driving. It will be investigated why our personnel did not go in search for the cavalcade,” said Rupesh Singh, circle officer (city II).
