Ahead of local body polls in Gautam Budh Nagar, the police have confiscated 30 cartons of liquors being illegally smuggled into the district. The local body polls are scheduled to be held on November 26, for which the election model code of conduct is already in place.

Dadri police on Thursday night arrested one person and confiscated 30 cartons of liquor containing 1,440 bottles that he was trying to smuggle into the district.

“We received a tip-off about liquor being smuggled into the district from Haryana. We raided a house in Samauddinpur village in Dadri tehsil and confiscated a large consignment of liquor,” Ramsen Singh, station house officer of Dadri police station, said.

The accused ferrying the liquor was identified as Dharmendra. He was produced before the district court in Surajpur from where was sent to jail, Singh added.

District excise officer, RK Singh, said, “We are carrying out raids in Jewar, Dadri and Rabupura areas for strict enforcement of excise laws during the forthcoming polls. Additional staff will also be called in to carry out searches in the district.”

The district administration has also carried out a poster removal drive in Dadri, Rabupura, Bilaspur, Dankaur, Jehangirpur and Jewar panchayats ahead of the polls. The police have also issued instructions to the police to nab all criminals and history-sheeters before the election, so that the polling could go off peacefully.

Senior police officers have also been ordered to keep a close watch in places bordering Haryana where several instances of liquor smuggling had come to light.

The Dadri police have also arrested five persons under Section 110(g) of CrPC on Thursday night. “The five persons are habitual offenders. We have taken them into custody to ensue that the elections go off peacefully,” station house officer, Dadri, said.

BN Singh, district magistrate, Gautam budh Nagar, has asked all district officials to carry out frequent inspections in poll-bound areas and ensure that the elections are carried out in a free and fair manner.
