A 40-year-old brick kiln owner was gunned down by unidentified car-borne assailants in Mau village of Modi Nagar town in Ghaziabad. The assailants fired almost 20 rounds at the victim. Of these, the body of the deceased, identified as Vijay Fafrana a resident of Modi Nagar, bore around 12 rounds.
The police suspect it to be a case of personal rivalry.
Assistant superintendent of police Ravi Kumar said, the victim has nearly 15 criminal cases registered against him. He has a history sheet at the Modi Nagar police station.
According to officers at the Modi Nagar police station, Fafrana and his cousin Vicky, had gone to get some medicines and was near his brick kiln on Fafrana Road around 6pm in his i10 car; Vicky was driving. Here, they were cornered by a group of three to four men in another car, which blocked Fafrana’s way. The group got out of the car and opened fire at Fafrana.
“The assailants opened indiscriminate fire at Fafrana and his cousin. They must have fired at least 20 rounds, if not more. Their aim was to ensure Fafrana is killed. The victim was seated in the passenger seat,” a police officer said, adding that Fafrana’s cousin, who was accompanying the victim and was in the driver’s seat, escaped the indiscriminate fire.
After the incident, the assailants fled towards Niwari Road.
“Fafrana sustained multiple injuries and was later declared dead at the hospital. The body of the victim had been sent for autopsy,” the officer said.
Senior superintendent of police HN Singh said, “The driver of the car sustained a minor injury on his back as a bullet brushed against his body. There were at least three assailants in the car. They had come to ensure that the victim is killed. Fafrana’s family does not suspect anyone so far, but we will inquire more. Nearly 20 rounds were fired at Fafrana. These bullets were fired from small weapons, such as pistols and revolvers.”
No FIR has been filed in this regard as yet. The weapons with which Fafrana was shot at have not been identified.
According to sources, the victim’s car was cornered by the assailants on the main road, which is barely 100 metres away from his brick kiln. The kiln is run by the victim and his brother.
