An Income Tax raid against an engineer in the Noida Authority on Friday revealed five cars including a Jaguar, at least 25 properties across various sectors, Rs 8 lakh in cash, and two families.
Documents accessed by the sleuths showed that assistant project engineer (APE) Chaudhary Brijpal Singh, 59, had two wives — one in Noida and the other in Faridabad — and two boys and a girl with each of them. Both his sets of children had the same names.
IT officials said that the children had been given the same names so that Singh could carry out property transactions in their names without any problems. All six of his children are adults.
HT is not revealing their names because they could not be contacted for comment.
“During the investigation, we found that Singh owns 25 properties registered in the names of his family members. He was shocked when we found out about his two wives and children. He kept the same names for his children from both wives to make the property buying and selling procedure suspicion free,” said Amrinder Kumar, principal director of the IT department’s investigation wing.
Singh lived with his legally wedded wife, two sons and a daughter in Noida’s Sector 27.
His second family lived in Faridabad, the sleuths said, adding that his wife may have been suspicious about his other wife because he visited the Faridabad house regularly.
Searches were conducted at both his Noida and Faridabad houses.
Singh was working in Noida Authority’s work circle 1 as an APE and was reporting to project engineer NK Bharadwaj. He was a president of Noida Employees’ Association in 1994-1995 and was due to retire in 2019.
The income tax department started search operations after it received complaints that Singh amassed assets by helping private contractors get government projects in Noida.
Following the searches, Singh was suspended by the Noida Authority on Friday.
“We will start seizing his properties once our investigation is over. Apart from these 25 properties, we have found documents of properties which have already been purchased and sold. He hasn’t declared any of those properties,” Kumar said.
(The story has been updated to say the engineer’s second family lives in Faridabad.)
