A 30-year-old undertrial, who was brought to the Ghaziabad district court on Friday for a hearing, escaped in a car with his accomplices in suspicious circumstances. The accused allegedly laced the drink of a police constable accompanying him and also threw chilli powder in his eyes to escape.
Accused Ruchin Kumar had been nabbed by police at Modi Nagar in November 2015 in a robbery case. He was later lodged at Dasna jail. According to the initial investigation, he had been brought to the court lockup around 11am on Friday. Around 2pm, he was taken from the lock up and was being escorted to the court room by constable Jitendra Chandel.
Based on the constable’s statement, Manish Mishra, circle officer (city), said, “While he was being taken to the court, Ruchin requested the constable to allow him to meet his sister-in-law who he said was in a Swift car at the court entrance near the Raj Nagar District Centre gate. While the two were walking towards the RDC gate, Ruchin gave Chandel something to drink. When the two reached the gate, a car was waiting outside with two to three persons seated inside.”
“As Ruchin boarded the car, he asked the constable to sit inside too. Later, the constable felt dizzy and Ruchin threw chilli powder in his eyes. The car was driven towards Sadarpur village where the constable was dumped and the accused fled in the vehicle with his accomplices,” Mishra added.
Officials said they are trying to verify the details provided by the constable who himself has a dubious past. In July 2015, Chandel and another constable were booked in a case of criminal intimidation and gangrape under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, at Vijay Nagar police station.
Ruchin, who is from Muzaffar Nagar, also has several cases of cheating, robbery and Arms Act against him, police added. Officials said that an FIR against Ruchin, his accomplices and the constable will also be registered at Kavi Nagar police station soon.
“The constable’s version is suspicious and we are conducting a detailed inquiry. Police teams have been sent to nab Ruchin and his accomplices. Strict action will also be taken against the constable for laxity,” said Salmantaj Patil, superintendent of police (city).
