Anand celebrates birthday with win

World Champion Viswanathan Anand could not have celebrated his 41st birthday in a better way. On Saturday, the Indian Grandmaster outplayed England's former World Championship finalist Nigel Short in the fourth round of the London Chess Classic.
Anand was thus sharing the top spot with Englishman Luke McShane, both with eight points in the eight-player round-robin tournament with soccer-style scoring which awards three points for victory and one for draw.
McShane survived some anxious moments before finally drawing his fourth round game against compatriot Michael Adams. Magnus Carlsen of Norway overcame Hikaru Nakamura of the United States while Vladimir Kramnik of Russia defeated David Howell in other matches in this round
With three more rounds to go, Anand and McShane lead Kramnik by a point with Carlsen fourth with six points. Playing with black pieces, Anand got some advantage in the middlegame. Short made a blunder as he sacrificed a piece looking for a non-existent attack and Anand capitalized on it.
Sethuraman in lead
New Delhi: SP Sethuraman of Tamil Nadu defeated overnight joint leader B Adhiban of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board in the fourth round to take sole lead with 3.5 points in the National Premier Championship.
Top seed GN Gopal and second-seed Parimarjan Negi were held to draws.
