Boxing bronze for Vikas Yadav

After Vijender Singh’s bronze-medal triumph at the Beijing Olympic Games, there is no stopping Bhiwani boxers. Vikas Krishan Yadav got another piece of glory for the Haryana hinterland when he clinched the 60kg boxing bronze at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old boxer defeated Daniel Echeverria of Mexico. Vikas led the charge in Round 1, while in the second and third rounds Daniel received three warnings, following which he was disqualified by the referee.
"It was an easy win. I wasn't too aggressive. I was leading 15-3 when in frustration, he started hitting me below the belt and was disqualified," Vikas said after the bout.
His coach back home was visibly pleased with the result as well.
“I was expecting a gold from Vikas considering his abilities. However, a bronze is also not a small achievement in any way. I’m sure this feat will push him to win accolades at the senior level as well,” said Jagdish Singh.
“I have set Vikas a stiff target now…to represent the country as a senior in the next six months,” the coach added.
The boxer has already made his presence felt at the domestic level by winning gold and the best boxer’s award in the recently held Senior National Championships in New Delhi.
In the only other sport in which Indians competed on Tuesday, the table tennis players won once and lost twice in their Group E mixed team league matches.
