Soumyajit Ghosh's heroics in the semifinal against England had instilled hope in the team, and also earned him the coach's confidence to start the proceedings. But his form nosedived as he was outplayed by Zhou Yihan 13-11, 11-8, 11-3.

Sharath downed
The onus was on Sharath Kamal to get his team back on level terms, but Li Hu had other plans. The red-haired paddler silenced the crowd at the Thyagaraj Stadium as he downed Sharath 11-4, 11-4, 11-9.

The only resistance came from Sanil Shetty. The southpaw put up a fight but eventually surrendered to the strong forehand shots of Ma Liang. The five-game thriller ended 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 7-11.

High on confidence, the Singapore women started the semifinal against England in trademark style, aggressive and hard on the ball. Feng Tian Wei beat Joanna Parker 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7.

The most impressive woman paddler of the tournament Yu Mengyu beat Kelly Sibley 4-1. In the third game, Ho Tin-Tin was overwhelmed by Zhou Yihan.
