Woman weightlifter faints during lift, comes back to win silver

Spectators at the Pan Am Games in Ontario witnessed a miraculous escape and an impressive comeback when a woman weightlifter fainted during a lift, but came back to win silver.

Spectators at the Pan Am Games in Ontario witnessed a miraculous escape and an impressive comeback when a woman weightlifter fainted during a lift, but came back to win silver.



Genesis Rodriguez Gomez, a 20-year-old Venezuelan weightlifter, was participating in the women’s 53kg event.

She lost control and fainted while attempting to clean and jerk 106kg.

To everyone's relief, she fell forward and the bar thudded down on the floor. She was lucky because weightlifting is replete with incidents of injuries caused by athletes losing control of the bar.

One of the more brutal injuries in the sport, seen millions of times on YouTube, is of Hungarian lifter Janos Baranyai dislocating his elbow at the Beijing Olympics.







Gomez, however, scripted an amazing turnaround after the lucky escape. She lifted the weight she failed at and then increased it by 3 kg to 109. She lifted that too to bag silver.
